Aberdeen academic appointed Chair of Scottish Science Advisory Council

A University of Aberdeen scientist has been announced as the new Chair of the Scottish Science Advisory Council (SSAC).

Professor Margaret Gill will join the SSAC next month and will serve on the panel, which supports the Chief Scientific Adviser for Scotland, Professor Sheila Rowan, in her work with Scottish Ministers.

Six leading scientists are set to join the Scottish Science Advisory Council (SSAC), the expert panel that supports the Chief Scientific Adviser for Scotland in her work with Scottish Ministers.

Professor Gill said: “I’m delighted to be appointed the Chair of the SSAC and look forward to working with our current and new members to continue to offer a broad range of science advice to support Ministers.”

Professor Gill is one of six new appointments to the SSAC.

Commenting on the new appointments, Professor Sheila Rowan, Chief Scientific Adviser said: “The new members have a wealth of science expertise, and this, together with their experience of working with industry and organisations across the UK, will help ensure that the Scottish Government has access to the best scientific advice across a diverse range of policy areas.”

Professor Graeme Paton, Head of the School of Biological Sciences, added: “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Maggie on her appointment - she will bring a fantastic energy to the role of leading such an important strategic directive for Scottish science.”
