Obesity and type 2 diabetes are among the global health care challenges of the 21st century. The University of Aberdeen has a 100-year history of ground-breaking science in nutrition and health, principally led by researchers within the Rowett Institute (RI). The primary cause of obesity is the consumption of more food than the body requires, calories that are then stored as fat. An understanding of the neurobiological mechanisms regulating physical activity, energy expenditure and food intake is essential to successful prevention and treatment of obesity and associated conditions. The brain represents the master coordinator of voluntary physical activity and appetite, employing a number of interwoven neurological circuits to continually appraise and respond to changes in energy balance. This position pioneers the discovery of key neurons modulating physical activity with ageing.
Research Fellow, Medicine, Medical Sciences & Nutrition
The Epidemiology Group (www.abdn.ac.uk/epidemiology) runs and hosts the UK Antimicrobial Registry (www.abdn.ac.uk/ukar). Funded by, and working with, the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (www.bsac.org.uk) this registry is designed to answer a broad set of research questions around novel anti-microbial agents and will, ultimately, contribute to the fight against antimicrobial resistance.

Research Fellow, Biological Sciences
The Scottish Fish Immunology Research Centre (SFIRC), within the School of Biological Sciences, undertakes fundamental and applied research to enhance current knowledge of fish physiology. We focus on immunology, new or improved therapeutic approaches to combat fish disease, and nutrition research to improve fish health and welfare. Working closely with the aquaculture industry, a key area of our focus is on the molecular and functional underpinnings of immune modulation in Atlantic salmon, particularly during the parr-smolt transformation. To better understand how light throughout production influences fish performance, the advertised position will investigate how photoperiodic entrainment influences the immune response and disease resilience of farmed Atlantic salmon. The work will involve fish trials using state-of-the-art aquarium facilities within the school and functional genomic approaches, including use of a recently established high throughput immune gene expression profiling (fluidigm) platform.
Research Fellow, Engineering
The research fellow post is for the EU Horizon Europe project “MoWiLife” (Condition Monitoring and Wide bandgap power electronics – Leading Innovations For the European Energy sector). MoWiLIfe (2024-2027) builds 4 demonstrators utilising latest SiC MOSFET devices, including: 2 wind generator converters, MV DC-DC converter, and a 5 kV Medium Voltage DC Circuit Breaker. The consortium is led by Rostock University and involves 9 partners.
Research Fellow, Medicine, Medical Sciences & Nutrition
THE ROWETT INSTITUTE, UNIVERSITY OF ABERDEEN and the Aberdeen-based Microbiology/Biotechnology company NCIMB will work together to further fundamental and applied research to enhance current knowledge about host-microbe interactions in the human gut that contribute to human health. The project aims to investigate interactions between a novel bacterial co-culture and specific prebiotic substrates. This will lead to generation of a novel synbiotic product to boost gut health and immune function specifically targeted at the ageing population.
