Modern Languages Industrial Action
Aberdeen UCU has given University senior managers notice of strike action over the continued threat of compulsory redundancies for our colleagues in Modern Languages
We voted for strike action in a ballot with 80% of those voting backing strikes on a turnout of 60% and the dates below were agreed at our branch general meeting of 8 February
Our strike will start for one day on Tuesday 12 March,
and then escalate to two days the following week, Thursday 21 and Friday 22 March,
and three the week after that, Monday 25, Tuesday 26, and Wednesday 27 March
Our escalating action leaves open the possibility of negotiations to end the threat of redundancies
As well as taking strike action, we will also be taking part in Action Short of Strike (ASOS) from 12th March. This includes:
- working to contract;
- not covering for absent colleagues;
- not rescheduling lectures or classes cancelled due to strike action;
- not sharing materials related to lectures or classes that will have been cancelled as a result of the strike action; and
- not undertaking any voluntary activities
See UCU guidance for further details
We have taken this action reluctantly. We are aware that it puts our students in a difficult position, however job cuts put their education in jeopardy. We are disappointed that senior managers have refused to remove the threat of redundancies despite a successful voluntary severance campaign and a modest uptick in student registrations. We have had several positive negotiation meetings in recent weeks with managers, but they remain committed to this harsh action. We remain open to negotiating and are ready to resolve the dispute and avoid the need to take industrial action as soon as they rescind the threat of compulsory redundancies
We are calling on all members to attend our rally this Monday 26 Feb in NK1 at 17.30. Please RSVP your attendance here: https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/ucu-aberdeen/t-zzjrlpq
We are now working to ensure we have the biggest picket lines on Tuesday 12 March, to force our employer to back down on their threats of compulsory redundancies We need volunteers to help during the industrial action. Please contact ucu@abdn.ac.uk to volunteer to help on the strike committee or in other roles
Thank you for your solidarity We can stand together to prevent these harsh measures against our fellow members and colleagues
