GUIDANCE ON EXAMINATION PROCESS
External Examiners for Research Degrees are asked to consult the information on Examining Research Degrees, which can be found in the Academic Quality Handbook .
This information outlines the process of examination of Postgraduate Research Students at the University and what is expected of Examiners.
EXAMINATION FEE
External Examiners for Research Degrees are eligible for the following fees:
First submission and viva:
- PhD/MD - £115
- Master's - £75
Resubmission:
- PhD/MD - £57.50
- Master's - £37.50
EXPENSES
External Examiners for Research Degrees can claim expenses incurred whilst undertaking the viva examination.
All reasonable out-of-pocket expenses, including those incurred in relation to essential visits to the University, will be paid on production of a completed expenses claim form and original copies of the appropriate, itemised receipts (please note that the completed expenses claim form must contain the claimant's original signature and only original copies of receipts are permitted). Expenses are not subject to income tax. Examiners should refer to the University's Expenses and Benefits Policy for guidance on what constitutes 'reasonable' expenses.
PROCESS FOR CLAIMING EXPENSES AND EXAMINATION FEE
Examiners for Research Degrees are required to complete an expense claim form
A copy of the expense claim form must be submitted, along with copies of receipts, to the relevant school contact. The letter that accompanies the thesis will detail the relevant School. The contacts for each School are as follows:
