EU Requirements

Application will be considered if candidates have achieved, or are predicted to achieve, our minimum academic requirements. All examination results must be obtained at the first sitting of each subject.

Advice for Completion of UCAS Form

Applications will not be considered unless all areas of the UCAS form have been completed including:

  • The names of schools, colleges and universities attended
  • All secondary school qualifications completed, giving names of qualifications and grades achieved
  • Qualifications not yet completed giving names of qualifications
  • Predicted grades: The referee must include predicted grades of all individual qualifications not yet taken
  • The Personal Statement: This must be written by the applicant and no areas should be copied from any other source
  • The Reference: Information must be supplied on the UCAS form - we will not send for a reference following receipt of the UCAS form. Applicants must not alter the reference in any way
  • All applicants for medicine must take the UCAT prior to application. 

English Language Requirements

Candidates whose first language is not English, must achieve:

  • IELTS (International Language Testing System): Band 7.0 overall with a minimum of 7.0 in speaking section.

Please note, all English qualifications must be taken within two years of applying for entry to the MBChB programme.

Typical Offer for EU Applicants

  • A typical offer will be Conditional upon achieving a minimum of the predicted grades below.
  • There may also be an English language requirement.

Austria: Austrian Matura (Reifeprüfung)

To be considered: Achieve / be predicted to achieve an overall Grade 2 (gut):

  • Chemistry is required at Grade 1 (sehr gut).
  • Two subjects from Biology, Mathematics and Physics are required at Grade 1 (sehr gut).

Belgium: Diploma Van Hoger Secundair Onderwijs

To be considered: Achieve / be predicted to achieve an overall Grade 8:

  • 5 subjects to be taken.
  • Chemistry and Biology are required.
  • One subject from Physics or Maths is required.
  • Grade 9 or more to be achieved in three subjects out of Chemistry, Biology, Physics or Mathematics.

Bulgaria: Diploma za Sredno Obrazovanie

Grade 6 (Otlichen) is required in 8 subjects including Chemistry plus two of Biology, Mathematics or Physics plus 2 others, excluding PE. Qualifications on their own cannot be considered for Medicine. Suitable additional/alternative qualifications would be:

  • GCE A-Level
  • Scottish Higher
  • International Baccalaureate
  • European Baccalaureate

Cyprus: Apolytirion of Lykeion or Greek Pan-Hellenic University exams

Qualifications cannot be considered for Medicine
Suitable alternative qualifications would be:

  • GCE A-Level
  • Scottish Higher
  • International Baccalaureate
  • European Baccalaureate

Czech Republic: Maturitni Zhouška / Maturita

To be considered: Achieve / be predicted to achieve an overall Grade 2 or better (chvalitebný):

  • Chemistry is required at Grade 1 (výborný).
  • Maths, Biology or Physics is required at Grade 1 (výborný).
  • Minimum of Grade 2 (chvalitebný) in all academic subjects, with a majority of Grade 1s (výborný).

Denmark: Bevis For Studentereksamen

To be considered: Achieve / be predicted to achieve an overall Grade 10 or better:

  • Four subjects to be studied to A Level.
  • A Level subjects to include Chemistry plus one science out of Biology, Maths or Physics.
  • Grade 12 to be achieved in three A Level subjects to include Chemistry, one science plus one other subject.

Estonia: Gümnaaasiumi lõputunnistus (Secondary School Certificate) at grade 12

Grade of 90% (väga hea) is required in all 5 subjects to include Chemistry plus two of Biology, Mathematics or Physics. In addition, the Riigieksamitunnistus (State Examination Certificate) must be presented. Qualifications on their own cannot be considered for Medicine. Suitable additional/alternative qualifications would be:

  • GCE A-Level
  • Scottish Higher
  • International Baccalaureate
  • European Baccalaureate

Finland: Ylioppilastukinto / studentexamen (Matriculation Examination)

To be considered: Achieve / be predicted to achieve the minimum requirements:

  • Chemistry, Maths and Biology at Grade 6/E minimum.
  • English plus Swedish or Finnish at Grade 5M minimum.

France: French Baccalaureate

To be considered: Achieve / be predicted to achieve 16-20 marks required overall = très bien:

Special subjects in Terminale:

  • Physics/Chemistry is required.
  • Either Mathematics or Life & Earth Sciences (Biology).

It is recommend that in Premiere; all 3 special subjects listed above are taken.

Germany: German Arbitur

To be considered: Achieve /be predicted to achieve Sehr gut level:

  • Equivalent to a score of 1-1.3.
  • Chemistry is required.
  • One subject from Biology, Physics or Mathematics is required.

Greece: Apolytirion of Lykeion or Greek Pan-Hellenic University exams

Qualifications cannot be considered for Medicine. Suitable alternative qualifications would be:

  • GCE A-Level
  • Scottish Higher
  • International Baccalaureate
  • European Baccalaureate

Hungary: Érettségi / Matura

To be considered: Achieve / be predicted to achieve Érettségi / Matura at emelt szintü level with Grade 5 (jeles) required in all subjects:

  • Chemistry is required as optional subject.
  • Maths is required.

Ireland: Irish Leaving Certificate

To be considered: Achieve / be predicted to achieve:  

  • three Higher Level subjects at Grade H1 including Chemistry and Biology and one other subject and;
  • three Higher level subjects at Grade H2 including English and either Maths or Physics plus one other subject.
  • Higher Merit /H2/Grade B or better is required in English, Maths and Science in the Irish Junior Certificate/JCPA

Junior Level: Physics is required; Maths and Biology are strongly recommended.

Italy: Diploma di Esami di Stato

To be considered: Achieve / be predicted to achieve Diploma di Esami di Stato with score of 95 or better (opzione Classica/Scientifica):

  • Chemistry is required.
  • Two subjects from Biology, Mathematics and Physics are required.

Latvia: Aestas par visparejo videjo zglitibu

To be considered: Grade of A required in all 5 subjects to include Chemistry (at advanced level) plus one of Biology or Physics. Qualifications on their own cannot be considered for Medicine. Suitable additional/alternative qualifications would be:

  • GCE A-Level
  • Scottish Higher
  • International Baccalaureate
  • European Baccalaureate

Lithuania: Brandos Atestatas

To be considered: Overall average grade of 9 in five extended level subjects to include Chemistry and Biology plus either Mathematics or Physics, each with minimum grade of 9. Qualifications on their own cannot be considered for Medicine. Suitable additional/alternative qualifications would be:

  • GCE A-Level
  • Scottish Higher
  • International Baccalaureate
  • European Baccalaureate

Luxembourg: Diploma de Fin Études Secondaires

To be considered: Achieve /be predicted to achieve 48+ Overall.

  • Chemistry is required at greater than 48.
  • Two subjects from Biology, Mathematics and Physics are required each at greater than 48.

Malta: Matriculation Certificate (MATSEC)

To be considered: Achieve / be predicted to achieve the following requirements:

  • Advanced Level: two subjects at AA, to include Chemistry plus one subject from Biology, Physics or Mathematics.
  • Intermediate Level: three subjects at AAB, to include one subject from Biology, Physics or Mathematics.
  • Systems of Knowledge.

Netherlands: Dutch VWO

To be considered: Achieve / be predicted to achieve an overall average of 8.0.

  • Chemistry is required at 9.0.
  • Two subjects from Biology, Mathematics and Physics are required at 9.0.

Poland: Polish Matura Swiadectwo Doirzalosci (completed after 2005)

To be considered: Achieve / be predicted to achieve three Extended Level examinations at minimum of 90%, 90% and 80%: passes to be ranked in the top 4% for each subject for the population (ie the 9th stanine).

  • Chemistry is required.
  • One subject from Biology, Maths and Physics is required.
  • One further subject, excluding Physical Education.

Portugal: Diploma de Ensino Secundário (completed after 2006)

To be considered: Achieve /be predicted to achieve the Diploma of an ‘Ensino Secundario’ course at Muito bom level.

  • Chemistry and English are required.
  • Two subjects from Biology, Mathematics and Physics are required.
  • Achieve grade 20-18 in all subjects.

Romania: Romanian Diploma de Bacalaureat

To be considered: Achieve / be predicted to achieve overall 9.8 within the Science Track only:

  • Chemistry and Maths compulsory each subject to achieve 10.
  • Romanian to achieve minimum of 9.

Slovakia: Maturitná skúška / Maturita (Matriculation Examination)

To be considered: Achieve / be predicted to achieve cumulative grade of ‘Honours’:

  • Chemistry and Biology are required at individual grades of 1.
  • One subject from Maths or Physics at grade 2.

Slovenia: Maturitetno Spricevalo

To be considered: Achieve / be predicted to achieve Grade 5 (Excellent) in each subject.

  • Chemistry and Biology are required as optional subjects.

Spain: Titulo de Bachillerato, (Spanish combined University Entrance Score)

To be considered: Achieve /be predicted to achieve a pass at 9 or better in Titulo de Bachillerato:

  • Grade minimum to be based on Bachillerato and Selectividad.
  • Natural and Health Sciences specialisation.
  • Chemistry is required.
  • Two subjects from Biology, Maths and Physics.

Sweden: Swedish Slutbetyg Gymnasieskolan (Secondary School Leaving Certificate)

To be considered:

  • Achieve / be predicted to achieve three subjects including Chemistry and two other sciences selected from Biology, Mathematics or Physics at 'A' grade and a minimum of 'B' grade in English and Swedish.

European Baccalaureate

To be considered: Achieve /be predicted to achieve the minimum grade of 84% overall:

  • Chemistry is required at 84% or more.
  • Two subjects out of Mathematics (4p) / Advanced Maths (3p), Biology (4p) or Physics (4p) each at 84% or more.

International Baccalaureate

To be considered: Achieve /be predicted to achieve 3 subjects at Higher Level (HL) at Grade 6 or better:

  • Chemistry is required
  • One of Maths, Biology or Physics is required
  • One other subject

plus 3 other subjects at an average of Grade 6:

  • IB must offer Chemistry plus a total of two sciences out of Maths, Biology or Physics.  Maths studies cannot be considered as one of the two sciences.

Note: At least 36 points to be achieved overall (including core).
