Name:

Aleksandra Staniszewska

Year:

Currently undertaking intercalated BSc Medical Sciences (started after the 3rd year of medicine)

Why have you engaged with Clinical Academic Training?

My engagement with Clinical Academic Training is a natural continuation of the values acquired in my secondary school where analytical thinking and practical skills were highly rated.

After my first year of medical school I received the Aberdeen Student Research Studentship and had an opportunity to work with the leading academics from our university. Their dedication and extraordinary interest in research has inspired me to pursue an academic career.

What other projects are you interested in?

I have been involved in multiple projects related to academic medicine. Apart from completing several projects in the Vascular Unit, I was awarded the Overseas Research Scholarship which allowed me to work in the Laboratory of Molecular Immunoregulation, National Institutes of Health (USA).

In parallel to being involved with research, I aim to promote academic medicine at our university on behalf of the Aberdeen Student Society for Academic Medicine and the INSPIRE programme. Our society engages with both medical and secondary school students hoping to create a generation of students who actively seek research opportunities.

Are you enjoying it?

The past few years were extremely enjoyable. Through participation in numerous events and conferences I managed to meet outstanding researchers, each of them providing me with a new perspective on the importance of science in medicine.

The results of my projects have been published in peer reviewed journals and presented at both national and international conferences.

Plans for the future?

I plan to apply for the Academic Foundation Programme and continue participating in research projects. My long-term career aspiration is to become an academic vascular surgeon.
