University receives industry backing for new MSc Subsea Engineering scholarships

The University of Aberdeen is offering three new scholarships to students studying towards its Masters in Subsea Engineering, thanks to contributions from two energy multinationals and a leading industry body.

The scholarships, which are available to UK and EU students, are being funded through contributions from Chevron, Subsea UK and Fugro.

Chevron is contributing approximately £19,000 towards a scholarship that will cover postgraduate tuition fees and provide a maintenance stipend.  Meanwhile, Subsea UK and Fugro will provide £8,000 and £6,000 respectively towards tuition fees and maintenance costs.

Professor Ekaterina Pavlovskaia, Director for Postgraduate Teaching in the University’s School of Engineering, said: “These scholarships offer a fantastic opportunity to anyone interested in a career in subsea engineering, and we are grateful to our industrial partners for the funding that they have provided.

“Our renowned Subsea Engineering programme benefits from input from our industrial partners, ensuring that graduates develop job-ready skills that allow them to hit the ground running in the workplace.”

Greta Lydecker, Managing Director of Chevron Upstream Europe, commented: “Through Chevron’s University Partnership Programme we are able to support students and universities who are striving to be at the top of their field.

“I am therefore delighted that Chevron can contribute to MSc scholarships such as this, to produce top level graduates in the field of Subsea Engineering who will go on to support the industry for many years to come.”

Neil Gordon, chief executive of Subsea UK said: “Skilled Engineers will be in demand for many years to come and investing in the talent of tomorrow is key to the subsea sector’s ongoing success.

“It’s important that we continue to support and engage with today’s students as they will be the ones that will be driving our industry forward in the future. By maintaining close links between industry and academia we can ensure that tomorrow’s leaders are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to embark on their own subsea journey.

“We are extremely proud to support the subsea engineering programme and help develop business links that will enhance the overall learning experience for scholars.”

Greig Sommerville, Subsea Engineering Manager, Fugro Subsea Services Ltd, said: “Engaging in the development of engineering talent is important for Fugro and the University of Aberdeen scholarships have provided an excellent opportunity to do this.

“For a number of years now Fugro has worked with the University to provide scholars with opportunities to enhance their learning through funding and practical engagement.”

The scholarships are open to UK and EU students with an offer to study the MSc in Subsea Engineering starting in September 2016.  The entry requirements for admission are at least a 2:1 UK Honours degree in Engineering or an equivalent award from non-UK institution.
