On Oliver's p-group conjecture.
Bob Oliver defines a characteristic subgroup X(S) of a p-group S and conjectures that it always contains the Thompson subgroup. If true this would give a classification-free proof of Chermak’s theorem at odd primes. Several special cases have been proved (joint work with L. Héthelyi and N. Mazza). I shall present a 3-group (joint with J. Lynd) which does satisfy the conjecture but shows up the limitations of our current methods.
