TITLE: Exploring Moral Dilemmas in Immersive Virtual Reality Environments

ABSTRACT:
Virtual Reality (VR) is a technology that simulates user experiences in a synthetic way. Immersion into VR is a perception of being physically present in a non-physical world. The goal of Immersive VR is to completely immerse the user inside the computer generated world. The aim of this presentation is to explore how immersive VR can be combined with moral philosophy. In particular, two different moral dilemmas (the ‘Trolley Dilemma’ and ‘Mad Bombers Dilemma’) were examined. For each dilemma, testing was performed on a sample of 30 participants (n=60). The results of the VR testing were compared to the results of a more traditional paper questionnaire (which describes the same scenarios as the ones experienced in the VR simulation) in order to find out, whether the sense of immersion the VR offers has impact on the choices made.
