The annual Chemistry Department PhD Symposium took place on Friday 10th June 2022, the first in-person event for the Department since 2019! The symposium had oral presentations, flash presentations and posters from our postgraduate researchers.
The annual Chemistry Department PhD Symposium took place on Friday 10th June 2022, the first in-person event for the Department since 2019!
The symposium consisted of oral presentations from our 3rd year PhD students, short flash presentations and posters from our 2nd years and posters from our 1st years, showcasing the diverse range of research taking place in the department, covering our main research themes of Energy, Environment, Advanced Materials, and Health.

The presentations were of an extremely high standard, and academic staff judges had a hard time choosing the winners. The prizes were awarded as follows:
Oral Presentations:
1st Place: Lewis Chouman, A General Route to the Synthesis of Highly Functionalised Pyrazole-containing Heterocycles.
2nd Place (joint): Federica Casolari, Developing an enzymatic system for methacrylate intermediates and esters & Dylan Tawse, Ionic Conductivity in Hexagonal Perovskite Derivatives.
Flash Presentations:
Winner: Ahlam Haj Hasan, Isolation and identification of pure compounds from fungal strains.
Poster Presentations:
1st Place: Jani Shibuya, Desalination Acid Base Battery (DABB).
2nd Place: Joelle Mergola-Greef, Downstream Processing and Structure Confirmation of Chemoenzymatically Produced Macrocycles.
Congratulations to the prize winners! Huge well dones to all the presenters; you represented the Chemistry Department wonderfully. Thank you to everyone who attended and participated with some insightful questions and stimulating discussions, and thank you to the event organiser Dr Hai Deng.
