Abstract: Intelligent Tutoring Systems and Intelligent Learning Environments have traditionally focused on adapting the content of the material that their students undertake according to the individual needs of each student. For the most part this has meant adapting to the intellectual progress that the students are making through whatever domain they are studying by adjusting the difficult of the problems, the nature of the feedback or the scaffolding and other help that are provided.
But students are not just “disembodied cognitive entities”, and often need to be motivated at the start of a learning interaction and possibly also re-motivated in the face of setbacks in their progress and of the negative feelings that can ensue such as boredom, frustration and disappointment.
This talk looks at work undertaken in Sussex towards building teaching systems that deploy a certain amount motivational intelligence in their dealings with their students.
Bio: Ben is Emeritus Professor of Artificial Intelligence in the Department of Informatics at University of Sussex. He is a member of the Human Centred Technology Research Group working in the areas of Artificial Intelligence in Education and the Psychology of Programming.
