Jennifer joins the group from Otago University in New Zealand, and will be taking up the role of Senior Lecturer with a special interest in anaesthetics and pain management.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I have a diverse background in epidemiology, medical statistics, and the history of medicine. I completed my PhD at Otago University in New Zealand in 2013, where I explored mortality risk factors from the 1918-19 Influenza Pandemic among WWI military personnel in New Zealand. My research included archival research, case-control and cohort studies, alongside qualitative analysis, and identified some unique pandemic mortality risks such as larger chest size, which was used as a proxy for lung capacity (measured during military uniform fittings).
Following my PhD, I joined King’s College London as a Research Fellow in Medical Statistics. In this role, I managed clinical trials, served as an independent representative for NICE medical technology assessments, conducted national registry studies for NHS England, taught academic courses, and provided statistical consultancy services.
In 2020, I returned to Otago University as a Senior Research Fellow, where I primarily worked on the COVID-19 pandemic response. My work included public and government engagement through rapid scientific briefings and media outputs. Additionally, I conducted research on the impacts of tobacco and vaping legislation on health and economic outcomes and investigated the lifetime impacts of military service in New Zealand.
What will you be investigating while you are in Aberdeen?
In my new role at Aberdeen, I will focus on research which aims to have real-world impact, particularly in anaesthetics and pain management. I will contribute to the Pain & Opioids after Surgery Research Group (PANDOS) and the Aberdeen Anaesthesia Research Network (AARN). Additionally, I will be involved in PhD supervision and postgraduate teaching and training.

Are you involved in any other research?
Yes, I am an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the University of Otago in the Health Environment & Infection Research Unit. My focus is on the epidemiology of the COVID-19 pandemic, both in New Zealand and internationally, with current research investigating the course and outcome of the pandemic across various island nations.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy creating art through drawing and painting. I am also passionate about mountain cycling, trail running, gold prospecting, and wild swimming. Like many New Zealanders, I love to travel and explore new destinations.
