MSc Safety and Reliability Engineering
Why did you choose this particular programme at the University of Aberdeen?
I've had 3+ years of professional experience working for ExxonMobil Upstream Operations as an Integrity Engineer. The scope of work was to work towards developing a safe working place for the personnel which included risk screening and assessment of the potential anomalies identified during the periodic inspections and provide recommendations based on engineering analysis and client specific guidelines. The professional experience helped me gain in-depth knowledge about the equipment and structures involved, working towards the goal of creating a safe working environment motivated me to pursue my master’s degree in Safety and Reliability Engineering.
What part of your degree programme have you enjoyed the most or find most interesting so far?
The MSc Safety and Reliability Engineering programme is very interesting and enjoyable. Some of the modules I enjoyed learning were Safety & Risk Management, Applied Risk Management, Process Design Layout and Materials, Human Factors Engineering & Subsea Integrity. I believe these are the few modules which are vital and must known concepts in the field of safety whilst working towards developing a safe working environment.
What knowledge, skills or experience have you gained or developed on your programme?
The MSc programme has helped me gain some concepts which are very essential for developing a inherently safe working environment. I have gained good understanding of risk identification, risk assessment & risk management and concepts like HAZID, HAZOP, SIL & LOPA. Few courses in the programme upskills the failure mechanisms and analysis, material selection and design considerations underlying issues from the industry perspective.
What are your plans for the future?
Upon graduation I would like to work for an organization and contribute my part by implementing all skills and knowledge I have acquired through the MSc programme to develop a safe working environment.
