The decisions that we make as we prepare to enter adult life, in terms of their impact on our future prosperity, success in career, lifelong friendships, general happiness, mental and emotional health, and even physical health, are as significant, and perhaps more important, than any other decisions we will make in our lifetime.
Do I need more education? Is college the right choice? Which college? What field of study? Is an undergraduate degree sufficient? If not, should graduate studies come before or after working experience? And increasingly relevant in this age of globalization of education, even the question of “College or university in which country?” should no longer be taken for granted.
As we contemplate these life-altering decisions, we might consider the advice of the poet, W. B. Yeats, who, inspired by Socrates, famously wrote, “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” Students should think of college as a precious opportunity to explore a very wide range of knowledge and experiential learning in search of their passions and their own natural aptitudes. It is at the intersection of these two, which I refer to as “the zone,” where students may reach their own true potential and achieve lifelong fulfillment. How many people can say that they have passion for, and fulfillment in, their work?
