A ceremony took place on the 21st October 2005 to commemorate a Banffshire-born sea captain who died at the Battle of Trafalgar.
A memorial stone to George Duff, who commanded the 74-gun HMS Mars at the famous sea battle in 1805 was unveiled in the grounds of Banff Castle.
The Rotary Club along with Banff Preservation and Heritage Society and the Friends of Duff House arranged for a sandstone memorial to be sited at Banff Castle overlooking the High Shore of town where George Duff was born in 1764.
A present- day member of the captain's family, David James Duff of Hatton Castle, 12th laird of Hatton, near Turriff, will attended the ceremony.
George Duff, the son of a sheriff clerk at Banff, began his seagoing career in 1777 and rose to the rank of commander in 1790 and captain in 1793.
Like the hero of Trafalgar, Lord Nelson, Captain Duff aged 42, lost his life during the conflict. He was decapitated by a cannon ball.
