Description
Built on a curve, Bervie Jubilee Bridge is a fine reinforced concrete viaduct taking the main road (A92) from Montrose to Stonehaven over the Bervie Burn on seven spans. The bridge was completed in 1935 (the silver jubilee of George V) and by-passed an earlier single-arched masonry bridge built in 1799, which still survives adjacent to the north abutment.
Related Information
This style of grand public project architecture from the 1930s is very evocative of period. Sometimes unpleasantly so for those who know what followed and see in it the semiotics of intolerance and totalitarianism. The integration of the street lighting into the design of the bridge is something I feel modern urban planners could well learn from. So many of our urban landscapes have been spoiled by street furniture that seems to be installed with a total lack of any aesthetic or design consideration.
