Description
Large woodcarving of a boulder throwing giant, carved from a single trunk with an applied copper kilt. Created in 1990s installed here in 2000, after being on tour with Scottish Sculpture Open 9, Kildrummy Castle (1997), MacRobert Art Centre, Stirling (winter 1997-8), fabricated at Scottish Sculpture Workshop, Lumsden

The giant represented is perhaps the mythical "Jock of Bennachie" who may have started as a deus loci of that hill and later became the subject of comic folk tale and ballad. Like mountain giants the world over he has a reputation for combating his neighbours by throwing large boulders, his particular rival being Jock O Noth the giant of a hill about 12 miles West North West from Bennachie and in clear line of site according to the ballad they fell out over a woman.
