Five things you can do to stay safe this winter

Five things you can do to stay safe this winter
2018-11-13

Now that the clocks have gone back, winter is well and truly on its way. Here are five things that you can do to make sure you survive the cold winters of Aberdeen.

Wrap up warm:

Yes we like to complain about the weather in Aberdeen – it does get very cold here in winter. But it is affa bonny! Be prepared – check the weather forecast for the day, and make sure to have a waterproof jacket in case of rain or snow. Dressing in layers can help you if the weather changes, or once you get back inside.

Tread carefully:

Ice and leaves can quite easily cause slips and falls. Where possible, stick to gritted or clear pavements, and sturdy footwear will help you keep your grip. Don’t be afraid to walk more slowly than usual, as smaller steps can help with your balance. You can also buy heel grips to slip over your shoes that can help you walk over icy pavements.

Walking in the dark:

With the darker nights, many of us will be heading home from the library or town in the dark. If you do walk home late at night, make sure to use well-lit routes, particularly along main roads. Where possible, stay with a group of people, and ensure you are aware of your surroundings.

Know who to turn to:

Should you need first aid or have an emergency on campus, you can call Campus Security team

The Safety Team can be contacted 24/7 on:

  • 01224273327 (non-emergency)
  • 01224273939 (emergency)

Have fun:

With winter, of course, comes exams and deadlines. The University and AUSA have a range of events, services and support to help you through this busy period.  Don’t forget though that winter in Aberdeen can be great! Whether you want to have a cosy night in with friends, visit our stunning castles in the snow, or enjoy some festive shopping or events in the city centre or on campus, there’s always something to do that will brighten up the dark nights.
