Message from the Principal

Dear colleagues,

I'm writing to express my deepest thanks for the many contributions of our whole community to recent achievements and external recognition of the quality of our work. These include:

Education

Second in the National Student Survey for overall student satisfaction with the quality of education and student support across universities in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (this measure is no longer used in England, which is disappointing because we were previously 5th in the UK for overall student satisfaction).

Research

Growth in the value of research awards of 30%; and extensive international media coverage of projects including: a new drug trial for the treatment of ectopic pregnancies, the discovery of a Pictish ring after more than 1,000 years, the use of AI to cut surgical waiting lists, images of microbial life in Loch Ness captured for the first time, and the impact of energy transitions on coastal communities

University League Table Rankings

  • Times/Sunday Times University League Table - 15th in the UK and second in Scotland
  • Guardian University League Table - 12th in the UK and second in Scotland

These are fantastic achievements that all our staff and students can take pride in.

The league table rankings are important because they contain measures that are central to our Aberdeen 2040 strategy, including research quality, student employability and environmental sustainability.

There is nothing natural or inevitable about these high rankings - only seven years ago our University was 40th in the Times/Sunday Times and 46th in the Guardian. The recognition of our work in this year's rankings is entirely attributable to years of sustained and productive effort by the entire University community.

I'm impressed and delighted that you've achieved so much during a whole series of challenging circumstances for the higher education sector.

Thank you!

George
