King's College campus planned power outage - weekend of 6 to 7 July

Dear colleagues,

There will be a major planned power outage over the weekend of July 6 and 7 - between 7am and 7pm both days on the King’s College campus to allow essential servicing and maintenance to be carried out on high voltage transformers and switchgear.

The electrical shutdown affects all King’s College campus University buildings – non-University properties on the High Street and University owned accommodation on the High Street will be unaffected.

On Saturday July 6 and Sunday July 7 the impact will be:

  • All Old Aberdeen University buildings, libraries and offices will be closed including the Student Union Building
  • Students in flats on Old Aberdeen campus will lose power, lighting, data communications and Wi-Fi connections
  • Students at King’s Hall and Elphinstone Road accommodation blocks will be provided with temporary alternative accommodation
  • Support can be sought by contacting hillheadstudentvillage@abdn.ac.uk or the 24/7 number 01224 27400
  • All wireless access points in Old Aberdeen will be offline
  • All 24-hour IT classrooms in Old Aberdeen will be closed

Buildings not affected:

  • University security office
  • Hillhead Student Village
  • Edward Wright IT data centre

Estates and Facilities are liaising with staff at Hillhead as well as Technical Resource Managers and Technical Resource Officers over the logistics involved in the shutdown.

Additional Information:

  • Power to Old Aberdeen campus buildings will be fully restored by 7pm both evenings after the completion of the required works
  • There will be no cleaning services on site at King’s College from 6am on Saturday 6 July until 10pm on Sunday 7 July
  • Estates and Facilities staff will be carrying out building inspections to ensure electrical services have been restored
  • Estates are working with key staff to provide temporary power to critical experiments and storage of laboratory specimens
  • Arrangements for alternative temperature-controlled food storage provision, in the MacRobert and SDRL Aberdeen Cafes and the Student Union Building, are being prepared
  • Colleagues within Estates & Facilities will engage and liaise with commercial tenants and trading partners on the High Street
  • The Security team will remain on site as normal

Reminders of the planned outage will also be cascaded via Schools and Directorates.

Any queries should be directed to electrical.maintenance@abdn.ac.uk

Best wishes
