Visiting Xi'an

Read about Dr Waheed Afzal's visit to Xi'an

Between 22 and 28 August, Dr. Waheed Afzal had a productive visit to Xi’an Jiaotong University in China. He was invited to share his research and expertise in two research seminars on converting waste into valuable resources – specifically, chemical recycling of wastes including plastics and carbon capture and utilization.

During his stay, Dr. Afzal engaged in discussions on how to develop collaborations with energy engineering professors at XJTU, including Prof. Xiangyang Liu, Prof. Fuxin Yang, and Prof. Maogang He, from the School of Energy and Power Engineering. These interactions paved the way for potential joint projects that could contribute to advancing knowledge in these fields.

Dr. Afzal also took the time to connect with the university's PhD students. They exchanged ideas on a range of subjects, such as carbon capture, designing effective solvents, developing gas-separation membranes, thermophysical properties for new fluids useful for the emerging processes, waste-to-energy technologies, and controlling harmful emissions from combustion systems. These conversations not only provided insights to the students but also expanded Dr. Afzal's own understanding.

Beyond the academic activities, he embraced the local culture and cuisine of Xi'an for which the city is famous. He savoured the city's diverse culinary offerings and explored its historical landmarks, all steeped in the history of numerous dynasties of ancient and medieval China.

Dr. Afzal told that his visit to Xi'an Jiaotong University has been marked by meaningful academic exchanges, potential collaborations, and cultural exploration. His time there contributed to the sharing of knowledge and experiences that will continue to shape his research and perspective moving forward.
