Did you know the University has an Open Research Service which includes among its services support to help you improve your citation count, analyse your citation data and contribute to work in your Schools to improve overall citation performance?
Citations are an important assessment tool for academics, Schools and the University. They inform funding decisions and influence significant league tables.
This week University Librarian Simon Bains presented to Senate on why citations matter, how to increase and measure them and the services offered by the Open Research team.
He explains: “Citations influence the league tables that measure our performance and affect our reputation.
“The University’s historically strong performance on citations, which accounts for 30% of the ranking in the Times Higher Education World University Ranking 2023, has slipped.
“In the QS World University Rankings 2022 our Citations per academic staff member improved but our ranking dropped. This demonstrates that further investigation is required to understand the global trends and our own ranking for citations in more depth so we can use these responsibly to ensure all citations are recorded and maximise our impact.”
There are a number of tools and techniques available to increase the profile of your research and help you analyse your citations and the Open Research team provides advice and training.
A brand new website dedicated to Open Research is available here and the team has recently launched the ExplORe Open Research Essentials training series as well as a Twitter account to promote services and initiatives @OpenResearchUoA.
They are now developing School Citation Analysis reports, which will soon be provided on a regular basis to Heads of School and Directors of Research.
