What is a SafePod?
A SafePod is a standardised safe setting that provides the security and controls for data that requires secure access for research. A SafePod includes a door control access system, CCTV, a researcher area for dataset analysis, secure IT cupboard and a height adjustable desk.
The major advantage of using a SafePod is that a researcher can securely access different data centre datasets from a single location, removing the need for long distance travel to a dedicated safe setting provided by a data centre.
Data currently available:
- Office for National Statistics
- UK Data Service
- SAIL Databank
- Scottish Government
- Health and Social Care Northern Ireland
- National Records of Scotland
- Leeds Institute for Data Analytics

The SafePod Network
The SafePod Network is an exciting and innovative research network that significantly improves access to secure data. A total of 25 SafePods will make up the SafePod Network, spread geographically across the UK and operating under standardised policies and procedures.
Booking a SafePod
Researchers must register with the SPN (which includes passing an online training questionnaire on the SPN User Agreement) before a SafePod can be booked and used to access project datasets. You don't have to be a member of the University of Aberdeen to use the SafePod. Once registered, a researcher can book and use any SafePod in the network for access to their project data from an SPN Data Centre. Further details about the researcher registration process is available here.
SafePod location and opening hours
The SafePod is located on the Ground Floor of Crombie Halls and is available for bookings from 10:00 - 16:00 Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays and University closure days.
