Dr Juliano Morimoto honoured with membership of RSE's Young Academy of Scotland

Lecturer in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Aberdeen Dr Juliano Morimoto has been appointed a member of the renowned Royal Society of Edinburgh's Young Academy of Scotland.

Dr Morimoto is one of 60 professionals joining the RSE Young Academy of Scotland (YAS) in realising its mission to achieve transformative societal change through citizenship, innovation, collaboration, evidence, and leadership.

YAS represents some of the nation’s most innovative young professionals from across the arts, business and industry, government, the public sector, research, academia, the third sector and beyond.

Dr Morimoto joined the University as a research fellow in 2020 and is now a lecturer in Zoology. His interests include insect mating systems, life-history trade-offs, reproduction, immunity, behaviour and conservation. Dr Morimoto is the Race Equality Champion for the School of Biological Sciences.

He said: “I am delighted to have been elected to the RSE Young Academy of Scotland along with outstanding colleagues. Being part of this cohort represents a new learning opportunity for me, which will certainly transform my personal and professional development. It also gives me the opportunity to serve the Royal Society of Edinburgh and strive to deliver academic and societal impact for Scotland and the UK”.

Head of the School of Biological Sciences Professor Graeme Paton added: “The research of our staff and students is making an immense contribution to some of the greatest challenges of our time and this latest recognition is testament to that. I warmly congratulate Dr Juliano Morimoto on his achievement in joining this exciting pool of research leaders of the future.”

Dr Margaret Cunningham, Co-Chair of YAS, said: “The Young Academy of Scotland is delighted to welcome this outstanding group of new members, whose talents and experiences will bring so much to our work. Our ongoing commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), which was diligently applied during our election process, led to diverse representation of new members from across many different sectors. We are hugely excited to see these new members bring their expertise, enthusiasm, and creativity to YAS to collaborate on new interdisciplinary projects that will achieve transformative change in Scotland and beyond.”
