University partners with Total on energy transition course

Students studying energy transition programmes at the University of Aberdeen are set to benefit from a short course delivered by Total Professeurs Associés (TPA), which is supported by the energy company Total's foundation.

The course – Fundamentals in Climate Change and Energy Transition – runs from 1-4 June and will follow the official launch of the University’s Centre for Energy Transition on 31 May.

It will involve 155 students from across a broad range of Masters programmes associated with the energy transition, from disciplines including computing science, engineering, geosciences, business and law.

The course is dedicated to the interdisciplinary analysis of different energy systems, their evolution, and impact and role within the context of the energy transition.

The partnership with TPA will see its senior staff deliver online lectures and participate in group discussions with students.

The course is underlining its backing for energy transition activities at the University including its support for scholarships on its MSc in Energy Transition Systems and Technologies and MSc in Renewable Energy Engineering programmes.

Tavis Potts, who is Head of the University’s Centre for Energy Transition, said: “We are delighted to partner with Total on this initiative, which will provide our students with an understanding of the complex relationships between climate, energy, impact on carbon emissions and the energy transition.

“It also gives students a pathway to understand methods, tools and trends to compare different energy systems while bearing in mind economic, technical, legal and environmental issues.

“Coming in the week that the University officially launches its Centre for Energy Transition, this collaboration is another indication of how we are working with industry to prepare today’s students to make a real impact as we aspire to meet our collective climate goals.”

Benoit Luc, Vice President, Total Professeurs Associés, said:

“The energy transition is critical to the future of our planet. We must reduce emissions, but we also have to continue to produce energy. The development of sustainable energies will strongly contribute to this objective. This course presents to students the different ways to provide the world with clean, affordable and reliable energy.”
