The Future of the Arctic Human Population: Migration in the North Conference

The Future of the Arctic Human Population: Migration in the North Conference

Takes place in Rovaniemi, Finland on 28 to 29 May 2020. The first ever conference on (im)migration in the cap of the north. Abstract deadline 29 February 2020.

(Im)migration in the north is not new, but it is an unexplored area of research and development.

The Arctic region faces new problems and challenges coupled with existing issues relating to Arctic migration. Asylum flows, refugees are a growing group of inhabitants in the Arctic. Cultural differences, acceptance of foreign citizens in the local communities, integration into local communities and labour market are one of many difficulties that require cross border cooperation, to be able to find ways forward with new and exciting ideas.

The network (UARCTIC) wants to address these issues and carry out pioneering work in the field of Arctic migration. This will be the first ever conference on (im)migration in the cap of the north.  It is part of a series of activities of UArctic Thematic network on Arctic Migration. All international Arctic and non-Arctic actors, researchers and policymakers are invited to attend the conferences.

The Nordic integration model works well in many areas and Nordic countries share and follow a comprehensive integration path which is based on welfare schemes. However, there are disparities between policies and the implementation of those policies in practice, in relation to immigrantion or refugees. Socio-economic integration is a complex phenomenon. Subjective happiness of immigrants’ and the degrees of being satisfied differ, depending upon the immigrant and city.

Some of the topics being investigated:

  • Whether any regional differences in happiness among immigrants in Nordic countries, will support or strengthen the Nordic synergies and identity.
  • Identifying degrees of satisfaction of immigrants.
  • Whether the impact of effective integration is similar across Nordic cities.
  • How the happiness of immigrants is distributed among the Nordic cities.
  • Whether the quality of life is similar within the Nordic countries.
  • Ideas to build integrated societies.
  • How best to model and measure an inclusive society, that will be resilient.
