University to host annual London celebration for alumni and friends

Members of the University of Aberdeen family don't have to be in the north-east of Scotland to enjoy its festive season offerings.

The University will host its third annual Celebration of Carols at St Marylebone Parish Church, London on Wednesday December 21 2016 at 7pm.

The event, which is sponsored by HSBC and will be recorded and broadcast by Classic FM on the 23rd December, will be hosted by Aberdeen alumnus Rev Canon Stephen Evans and will showcase the University’s Chamber Choir, led by royal composer, Professor Paul Mealor.

British actor Sir Tony Robinson and ‘Call the Midwife’ actress and Aberdeen alumna, Laura Main will be amongst the  readers at the celebration.

As well as allowing staff, students and alumni the opportunity to come together during the festive period, the event also provides the University with the opportunity to raise funds for its ground-breaking research in the fight against dementia.

Liz Bowie, Director of Development & Alumni Relations at the University of Aberdeen, said: “The Celebration of Carols is a fantastic event and we are delighted that so many of our alumni and friends are able to attend. We are thrilled to be working with Classic FM and are delighted that its broadcast of the event will bring the talents of our wonderful Chamber Choir not only to those who cannot join us but to a much wider audience, a couple of days later.

“We are hugely grateful to HSBC for its generous sponsorship in support of the event, and to the members of the Aberdeen family who are helping us  raise vital funds for dementia research.”

Sir Tony Robinson said: “As an Ambassador for Alzheimers Society I’m pleased and proud to be taking part in this event, particularly as I’ll be working in conjunction with Classic FM and the prestigious University of Aberdeen whose work on dementia research is world renowned.”

Laura Main added: "It is a huge honour to be invited back by my old university to do a reading at their carol service, in aid of the ground-breaking work which the University of Aberdeen does towards the fight against Alzheimer's disease. I had a wonderful three years studying History of Art but also made full use of the fantastic extracurricular drama scene on offer there, and it's a lovely feeling to be acknowledged the University and I'm really proud to be able to help in a very small way. An evening like this raises vital funds to continue that research as the University makes strong progress in the quest to overcome this global epidemic."
