Explorathon 2024

Explorathon 2024
-

Find out about research taking place at the University of Aberdeen and how it impacts on your life.

Explorathon is back for 2024 and researchers from the University of Aberdeen are ready once again to celebrate the diversity of research and its impact on everyday life.

Held throughout September, our calendar of events gives young people, parents and the wider public a peek behind the research curtain.

This year, we are pleased to be working with TechFest to bring Explorathon events to the Aberdeen Science Festival. Find out more about our events below:

The Orkney Cancer Gene: Discovery and Lessons, 18 September 2024 7pm-8pm

Professor Zosia Miedzybrodzka will discuss research which has identified cancer genes in families in Orkney and Shetland, and the impacts for cancer screening in the future.

Explorathon Discovery Day, 22 September 2024 10am-4pm

Join researchers as they Make Research Real with hands-on activities, demonstrations and exploration of science, art and more.

The Ugly Animal Show, 22 September 2024 3pm-4pm

At the Ugly Animal Preservation Society, we celebrate and explore the incredible biology of the animal kingdom’s most monstrous. What adaptations make them amazing? How did such hideous creatures evolve in the first place? The show features videos, demonstrations and lots and lots of audience participation.

Sci-Fi Snobbery, 22 September 2024 7pm-8.30pm

What is the best science fiction film of all time? That’s the question posed by terminal Trekki Jamie Gallagher and sci-fi cynic Simon Watt as they delve into the movie archives and debate the cinematic merits (and scientific oversights) of some of their favourite science fiction flicks.

Cafe Controversial - Ideas About Death, 25 September 2024 7pm-9pm

Come into the realm of Dangerous Ideas, blending research, audience interaction and a dash of comedy.

Science & the city: Walking Tour, 27 September 2024 2pm-3.30pm
