Queens' College, University of Cambridge
Mishka Sinha from Queens' College from the University of Cambridge will give a talk on 'Re-orienting the Raj: Sanskrit and Governing of Empire'.
Thursday, 3 May 2012, 2.00 pm
Venue: Taylor A 17, King’s College, University of Aberdeen
Open to the public & co-hosted by CASS’ Global Empires programme
This talk will look at the British relationship with Sanskrit. As Dr Sinha will demonstrate, there was often a wide gulf between the position of British Orientalists who believed that the knowledge of Sanskrit would confer a far greater potential for cultural and political power and dominance in India, and that of British administrators whose arguments and policies showed that they did not share this belief. Indeed, the teaching of Sanskrit in Britain at Oxford and Cambridge and elsewhere may have eventually helped to undermine British power in India.
