Doubly-Labelled Water Laboratory
The Doubly-labelled water (DLW) method is an isotope based technique that allows us to measure CO2 production; hence energy expenditure in completely free-living humans and animals. Our laboratory is based in the Zoology Building in the University of Aberdeen.
We have a separate clean lab for sterile DLW dose preparation and a dirty lab for sample analysis and conduct all sample distillation there to extract the water that we need for our analysis. We have 2 Los Gatos liquid water analysers (LIWA and TIWA), and 3 mass spectrometers. The TIWA is dedicated to the human samples and the LIWA to animal samples.
