Item Description

These five 'epistles' are written in the biblical style relating to the New Testament book of the Acts of the Apostles, in this case, the apostles being the town councillors. The first epistle is about city council elections, with particular reference to a certain Mr Wallace, a confectioner to trade. The second epistle considers an official visit by Queen Victoria as well as other council matters. The third epistle is in the form of a poem in dialect, to Councillor James Wallace Thom, who planned to stand as provost. The fourth epistle concerns the council's plans for the proposed railway line - which, for many practical reasons, the people of Aberdeen were not happy about. The final epistle is also in the form of a poem and is addressed to Alexander Cook junior.
The epistles came out at different times and have different publishers. The first epistle was published by James Daniel and Son and the fifth by A Martin. The others were all printed and published by W Forbes, Aberdeen.
