The top article which appeared in The Aberdeen Shaver, a satirical newspaper, mentions the huge radical demonstration held at the Links, Aberdeen on 16th August 1838. However, the writer is more concerned with satirizing the sentiments of the meeting and the participants themselves, than reporting what actually happened. The lower article is a cheeky description of the events. 'Lang Sandy' is Alexander Bannerman, factory owner and Whig MP for Aberdeen. 'Mr Adam' was James Adam, the editor of the Whig paper, The Aberdeen Herald. 'Ten pounders' were those entitled to vote in general elections because the rented or owned property which had an annual value of at least £10.
