Biography
I obtained my PhD in Chemistry in 1996 and moved then on for three years (two of them with the support of a Marie Curie Training and Mobility of Researchers Fellowship) as a postdoctoral fellow in the group of the late Prof. D.M. Kolb at the University of Ulm (Germany).
In July 2001 I was selected as Provisional Staff Scientist at the Institute of Physical Chemistry “Rocasolano” (CSIC) in Madrid, where I promoted to Staff Scientist in December 2002 and then to the Senior Scientist scale of CSIC in March 2010.
I was appointed as Senior Lecturer at the University of Aberdeen (UK) in July 2013, where I promoted to Reader in August 2016 and to Personal Chair in August 2018. I served as the Director of Research of the School of Natural and Computing Sciences from 1 August 2018 to 31 July 2021 and as the Interim Head of the School between 1 October 2021 and 31 August 2022.
I was awarded the CIDETEC prize for scientific research [1] 2006, and a Visiting Professorship at the Catalysis Research Centre of Hokkaido University (Sapporo, Japan) in 2007.
Between January 2017 and December 2018 I served as Chair-Elect of Division 7 (Physical Electrochemistry) of the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE), as Chair of the Division between January 2019 and December 2020 and I am currently the Immediate Past-chair until December 2022.
I was member of the Editorial Board of Electrocatalysis (Springer) between 2010 and 2014. I belong to the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Electroanalytical Chemistry (Elsevier) since January 2016 and of Electrochemical Science Advances (Wiley) since 2020. I am a member of the Editorial Board of Current Opinion in Electrochemistry (Elsevier) between 1 December 2022 and 30 November 2023.
[1] The CIDETEC prize for scientific research is awarded yearly by the Electrochemistry Group of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry (RSEQ), and is funded with €6,000 by CIDETEC.

Research Overview
The work in my group is focused on the combination of classical electrochemical techniques with in situ optical spectroscopies and scanning probe microscopies, in order to obtain an as detailed as possible description of the electrode surface and the electrochemical double layer at the atomic and molecular level. I am mainly interested in problems dealing with Electrocatalysis (reaction mechanisms, reaction and surface dynamics, atomic ensemble effects) and surface nanostructuring.Research Areas
