Electrochemistry for energy applications: experiment meets theory
Energy-related research is without any doubt a world-wide research priority. Electrochemical phenomena and systems are crucial for energy conversion and storage and for the development of a carbon neutral economy. China's economy has been growing at rates around 10% per year in the last 20 years, and has been meeting its resulting growing energy needs by building a new GW of coal power plants per week (over 50 GW per year).
Both due to global warming concerns as well as to serious pollution problems in China associated to burning coal, there is an urgency to develop economically viable systems for energy conversion and storage that can help China move rapidly to lower-carbon or carbon-neutral power sources. This workshop focuses on the use of electrochemical technologies for efficient conversion and storage of energy, particularly in relation to the transition from a fossil-fuels-based economy to one based on the use of renewable energies. We discuss the limitations to the development of these technologies as economically viable alternatives, and the challenges associated to finding solutions to these limitations.
