On 20 June 2014 Dr. Dirk Hanschel gave a talk on offshore wind energy and international law at the 11th International Summer Academy “Energy and the Environment” , organized by the Institute for Climate Protection, Energy and Mobility in Berlin. Speaking to a mixed audience of advanced students, scholars and practitioners in law and related disciplines, he pointed out potential sovereignty and other legal issues regarding offshore wind energy installations in the North and the Baltic Sea and the solutions that international maritime law as well as international environmental law provide. He also commented on current efforts to move towards a European offshore grid including the perceived necessity to develop integrated maritime spatial planning in order to identify ideal spots for installations and to connect them in the most efficient way.
