Biography

With over 40 years experience in the use of chromatographic techniques, I now find myself managing the Rowett Analytical Facility, in the institute where, in 1952, Richard Lawrence Millington Synge was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry (along with Archer Martin) for the invention of partition chromatography.

I began my chromatographic journey in the 'very' early 80s using GLC and then HPLC, in the lab of Gabrielle Hawksworth, and I continued to work with Gay until her passing in 2012.  Initially, I used these platforms as tools in understanding the underlying mechanisms of drug metabolism and toxicology, especially the roles of the cytochrome P450s and UDP-glucuronosyltransferases in these processes.  As the technologies developed, I concentrated more on developing new analytical methods for the research staff and students in the group and then beyond, becoming a specialised 'core facility' for the quantitative analysis of endogenous compounds and xenobiotics and their metabolites.  In recent years, I have been focused on developing new quantitative LC-MS/MS methods and have collaborated on a wide range of projects with colleagues within the University of Aberdeen and elsewhere.

The Rowett Analytical Facility has a suite of labs, a wide range of state of the art equipment and a highly-skilled team, working in support of research in the Rowett, the wider university community and with external stakeholders.
