New investigation in the Journal of Crohn's and Colitis looking at vitamin D supplementation for vitamin D deficient patients with and without ulcerative colitis
A collaborative project between the CGEBM, researchers at St. Mark's Hospital, London, and researchers in Australia has aimed to investigate the impact of vitamin D on both intestinal inflammation and the gut microbiota in patients with ulcerative colitis. These patients typically demonstrate gut dysbiosis and severe symptoms associated with IBD. In these patients, vitamin D supplementation was linked to decreases in calprotectin and increases in albumin. Although faecal bacterial diversity was largely unchanged, the abundance of Enterobacteriaceae was shown to increase.
