The eminent German writer, Peter Schneider, will visit the University of Aberdeen and read from his book Berlin Now.
On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the German reunification, Schneider will take the audience on a journey through the vibrant, ever evolving metropolis of Berlin, a city that has seen more radical changes than any other in recent history. Blending history, memoir, anecdote and reportage, the legendary Berliner takes us behind the scenes to reveal the tumultuous politics and hidden quirks that make this city so fascinating.
Born in 1940, Schneider has been a witness of contemporary German history. He has lived on and off in Berlin since the 60s, when he was a key spokesperson for the German student movement. His unique experiences are reflected in his work, which includes the Wall Jumper, Lenz and Rebellion and Delusion. Schneider has been awarded several literary prizes, such as most recently the Schubert Literature Prize (2009).
Schneider has also been a visiting professor and writer in residence at several top US universities, such as Harvard, Princeton, Stanford and Georgetown, and is currently the DAAD Writer in Residence at Queen Mary University of London. The DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) supports British Universities in hosting a German author, in order to give students the opportunity to experience a German writer in person.
It is in conjunction with the DAAD programme, that Peter Schneider will be visiting Aberdeen University. He will read from Berlin Now on October 13 at 12pm in the Sir Duncan Rice Library (room 224). The reading will be conducted primarily in English and is open to anyone with an interest in German history, culture and literature.
