The European Parliament Information Office in Edinburgh and the Aberdeen Institute of Energy invite you to a discussion.

The European Commission’s plans for an Energy Union between EU member states will be the subject of a debate taking place at the University of Aberdeen on Friday.

Energy Union has recently been at the forefront of discussion within the European Parliament. What are the policy implications of these discussions, and how will it make a difference to the everyday lives of people in Scotland?

A panel of distinguished speakers including MEPs, civil society, academia and industry figures will discuss the implications of Energy Union for Scotland, the UK and Europe as a whole. The event will include contributions from guest speakers including Ian Duncan, Conservative MEP for Scotland, and Lang Banks, Director of WWF Scotland. Other speakers include Maggie McGinley, Director of Energy and Clean Technology at Scottish Enterprise, and John Scrimgeour, Executive Director of the Aberdeen Institute of Energy. Veteran journalist and broadcaster Charles Fletcher will moderate the debate, which will focus on various aspects of the proposals for an Energy Union, a key aim of the current EC President Jean-Claude Juncker.

Discussion points will include the implications for Scotland and Aberdeen arising from an Energy Union, the key role that the North Sea Offshore Grid could play, whether shale gas or nuclear energy should be used as part of the energy mix, and environmental considerations.

A question and answer session will round off the debate, which is being held at the Sir Duncan Rice Library, and which has been organised by the University in collaboration with the European Parliament Information Office in Scotland.

Join us for the discussion and a buffet.
