Synthetic Biology: Are we 'making life better'... or opening a Pandora's box?

Synthetic Biology: Are we 'making life better'... or opening a Pandora's box?

This is a past event

Synthetic Biology is a fascinating new subject which combines biology and engineering to create living cells with new desirable functions and traits. Engineering principles and mathematical modelling are used to design and construct, with predictable outcomes, novel gene circuits in previously unrelated cells.

However, the stigma surrounding genetic modification means this technique is often viewed as controversial. Despite this, synthetic biology has huge potential to address a number of key biotech challenges facing human society, from making biofuels to the manufacture of new, non-oil based chemical feedstocks. Convincing the public this is not another ‘Frankenstein’ science requires dialogue between scientists and the public. This illuminating talk, followed by an open question and answer session, will seek to present a balanced view of this new science that has the potential to affect all our lives.
