This is a past event

This March, we bring you the biggest ever programme of events to celebrate National Science and Engineering Week across Aberdeen City and Shire. Shows, talks, exhibitions, hands-on activities, tours - there will something for everyone.

Would you like to discover more about the secrets of the brain?  Are you willing to be sold on science at Thainstone's Sunday Market, or mingle with science buskers at Union Square? These are just some of the fascinating opportunities happening in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire during this year's National Science and Engineering Week taking place between the 12th and 21st of March.

With thirty separate events from Archeology to Zoology there is sure to be something for everyone.  The programme is organised by the British Science Association in Aberdeen and aims to enthuse school pupils and the public with issues in science, technology, engineering and maths. Highlights include:

  • Clinical Skills Open Day on Friday March 12th
  • Science in the Square at Union Square Aberdeen with University Sciencebuskers and TechFest-SetPoint Hands-on Activities, on Saturday 13th March
  • Ig-Nobel Award Ceremony streamed live to Kings Conference Centre from Dundee, on Saturday March 13th
  • Car-boot Science - our new initiative to sell science to the masses - premiering at Thainstone Market on Sunday March 14th
  • Bring your own Brain - a fascinating evening of brain-busking, topical research and music to celebrate Brain Awareness Week on Thursday March 18th
  • Discovery Day - the return of our hugely popular Discovery Days at Satrosphere Science Centre and Aberdeen Maritime Museum on Saturday March 20th
  • Wildscreen Biodiversity Film Festival - a stunning look at nature's diversity, with films screened through the day, on Sunday March 21st

The range of activities in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire are among the best in the UK. A week-long programme of schools activities involving over 15 partner organisations compliments the public mix with the Scottish Government's "Do Something Creative, Do Science" campaign being celebrated through a series of Open Doors events for 11 - 16 year olds.  This year's Schools Challenge is to make an air-powered racer, launched at a Teacher Twilight session in February and attended by over 35 teachers from 28 schools across Aberdeen City and Shire.

A full programme is now available for download at www.abdn.ac.uk/science/nsew/

The programme is supported by the University of Aberdeen through a Scottish Government Science Engagement Award and coordinated by the British Science Association in Aberdeen, supported with funding from BP.  Events are staged thanks to a partnership of over 20 organisations with pilot project funding from RCUK and the British Science Association.
