The Scottish Emigration Database

Objectives

To compile a relational (Microsoft Access) database of passenger information from the Board of Trade records in The National Archives at selected intervals between 1890 and 1960.
To make available, in easily-accessible electronic format, the unique but unwieldy information contained in the Board of Trade outward passenger lists (TNA, BT 27).
To use this information to undertake investigations into the Scottish diaspora, with particular reference to geographical origins, occupations, age profile and family composition.
To compare the findings with those available through the published reports in the Board of Trade Journal held at the University of Hull.
To provide a powerful quantitative tool for research into Scottish emigration between 1890 and 1960.
To challenge stereotypes of Scottish emigration.
To build on the work of scholars working in the field of late nineteenth- and twentieth-century emigration, including Dudley Baines, Jeanette Brock, Enda Delaney, Tom Devine, Kent Fedorowich, Marjory Harper and Angela McCarthy.
