Folio 124v

Devotions to the Virgin Mary, continued.

Hymn, O Maria piissima.

A hymn to the Virgin Mary (AH, 15, p 140), invoking her as the brightest star of the sea, the mother of mercy and the temple of chastity. The author asks that through her intercession, Jesus may save him from evil, make him to rejoice in goodness, rid him of vice, strengthen him in virtue, grant and keep him in peace. He asks that at his death she will reveal herself to him; that through her he may escape from Satan; that she may lead him to heaven, notwithstanding the devil's attempts to obstruct his way with true and false accusations of evil, until she can deliver him to the care of St Michael, whose task it is to rescue worthy souls from the devil and restore them to paradise.

O Maria piissima
stella maris clarissi\ma
mater misericordie
aula pudicicie

ora pro\ me ad dominum
Ihesum tuum filium
ut me a\ malis eruat,
bonis gaudere faciat,

a viciis eva\cuet,
virtutibus corroboret ,
tranquillitatem tribuat,\
et in pace custodiat.

Cum finis vite mee venerit,\
meis te prebe oculis
ut terrorem tunc Sathane
per\ te queam evadere

conductricem te habeam
redeundo\ ad patriam
ne callidus diabolus
viam perturbet\ invidus,

obiciendo plurima
et falsa vera <quoque> crimi\na
donec reddas preposito
Michaeli archangelo\

cuius constat officio
a maligno dyabolo
dignos\ quosque eripe [eripere]
et paradiso reddere.

Per te virgo filium [filius]\

esto nobis quesumus ad obitum nostrum.

Hymn, Te Michael iam obsecro.

A hymn to St Michael. The author asks him, together with the spirits and hosts of heaven, to furnish him with all that is necessary for life and to enable him to withstand the wickedness of his enemy[the devil], that the latter may not entrap or devour him or rejoice in the suffering of his soul.

Te Michael iam\ obsecro
et voto cordis supplico
cum omnibus spiriti\bus
celorumque ordinibus
ut vite necessaria
michi mi\nistres omnia,
et bene stare facias

ne fraude circumveniat,
aut devorans\ interemat
vel de dampno miserie
mee letetur a\nime. Amen.
