Tell us about your role at the University.

I work as a Data Coordinator within the Grampian Data Safe Haven (DaSH). We manage various high-profile health datasets and provide access to those datasets via a secure environment.

What brought you to the University of Aberdeen?

This is my second stint at the University of Aberdeen. I first started in the School of Biological Sciences as a Technician in 2010. I then took a break, returning to the Oil Industry, prior to coming into my current role in 2019.

What is your current focus?

I don’t have a focus as such, I work with researchers and data controllers to ensure the safe use of non-consented medical data for research. If I had to say, I would say that my focus is ensuring the safety of patient data.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love my colleagues; we make a great team. Also, no two projects are alike, so we are continuously challenged with new ideas and problems to solve.

What is your favourite thing to do in your spare time to relax?

I enjoy open water swimming at Stonehaven harbour.

What made you choose this career?

A friend recommended the job to me after maternity leave. It looked like it suited my skills, and I applied thinking that the interview would be ‘good experience’. Years later I’m still here, and as I love a spreadsheet it suits me perfectly.

If you could go back in time and choose a different career, what would you choose and why?

I wouldn’t have done a degree in Forensic Science! Very interesting and a very broad general science degree but not looked on as fondly by employers as a traditional Analytical Chemistry degree. I think I would have focussed more on data administration.

What do you think is the most challenging part about your job?

Change – technology is constantly evolving, and it sometimes feel like I just get my head around something before it changes again (sometimes for the better!)

What is an accomplishment in life you are proud of?

My children.

Who has inspired you in your life and why?

My family – they are so supportive and always there to lend a hand or an ear.
