Short stories are under-represented in translation but they have much to offer. In this online event, translators and Paper Republic members Eric Abrahamsen and Dylan Levi King discuss why readers, and publishers, should dive in.
Points of discussion will include why the short story form is so rich in Chinese literature, what is available to read (in Chinese and other languages) and where to find it, why short stories are neglected in translation, why genre fiction predominates in translated short story publishing, and more.
Eric Abrahamsen is a literary translator and publishing consultant currently living in Seattle. He's the translator of Xu Zechen's 'Running Through Beijing', and his short story translations have appeared in The New Yorker, Granta magazine, and n+1. He has taught translation in a variety of venues, organized small literary festivals and publishing fellowships, and helps run Paper Republic, a platform promoting Chinese literature in translation.
Dylan Levi King is a translator and writer based in Tokyo. He has previously translated Jia Pingwa, Cai Chongda, Dong Xi, and Mai Jia.
