The next meeting of the Chinese Studies Group will take place on Tuesday, 24th March 2020, in Room F61, Edward Wright Building, Old Aberdeen, at 5:15 p.m.

 

Dr Derek Hird, Senior Lecturer in Chinese Studies and Deputy Director of the Confucius Institute, Lancaster University, will speak on “Creativity and Masculinities in Chinese Male Beauty Vlogs".

Dr Hird's research interests include transnational Chinese middle-class masculinities, Chinese male beauty cultures, and happiness and health in Chinese populations. He is co-editor (with Song Geng) of the Transnational Asian Masculinities book series for Hong Kong University Press. Recent publications include “Smile Yourself Happy: Zheng nengliang and the Discursive Construction of Happy Subjects” in his co-edited (with Gerda Wielander) Chinese Discourses on Happiness (HKUP 2018), and his co-edited (with Song Geng) The Cosmopolitan Dream: Transnational Chinese Masculinities in a Global Age (HKUP 2018).
