Local Travel

Aberdeen International Airport is approximately 6 minutes from Aberdeen City Centre.The University of Aberdeen is approx 30 mins walk/5 minutes drive from the city centre of Aberdeen. Travel is usually via the city centre except when taking a taxi.

By local bus to City Centre

Stagecoach operate the 727 bus directly from outside Aberdeen International airport to Union Square bus station in the city centre.

By local bus - City Centre to Old Aberdeen Campus

There are two bus companies operating in the city – FirstBus and Stagecoach – there is more information, and links to both companies on the conference website. 

  • FirstGroup provide more frequent buses between the city centre and the University of Aberdeen.  The numbers 1 & 2 operate 7 days per week and travel along King Street which runs parallel with Elphinstone Hall at the University of Aberdeen.  Alternatively, you can travel to the University from the city centre on the number 20 bus which runs up the High Street. 
  • Stagecoach Bluebird bus company provide frequent buses from the airport to the city centre (Jet 727), as well as bus routes which pass very close to the University of Aberdeen, including destinations:  Ellon, Balmedie, Peterhead, and Fraserburgh buses, numbers: 50, 53, X60, 61, X63, 67, X67, 68, X68. 

A grasshopper bus pass may be purchased on any bus for £4.75 per day or £22.50 per week, and will allow travel on any bus within zone 1 (all venues being used at IUTAM 2024 are within zone 1, however if you wish to explore Aberdeenshire, you may wish to purchase a ticket to travel within a wider zone).

A taxi from either Aberdeen Rail or Bus Station to the Old Aberdeen campus can cost around £10-15.  A taxi from the airport to the campus can cost around £20-£25 also depending on traffic and the time of day.  Taxis can be ordered from:

Car

Travelling to the Old Aberdeen campus by car:

Entering the city from the south or west, follow signs for the A90 (Fraserburgh and Peterhead). This leads round the ring road (Anderson Drive). Exiting from a roundabout (signed Old Aberdeen) onto Cairncry Road, continue to follow the A90 signs through two further roundabouts onto St. Machar Drive. After a third roundabout, the road bisects Old Aberdeen and local signs will direct you to University sites. From the north, Old Aberdeen is signposted on the A96 (from Dyce and Inverness) and on the A90 (from Peterhead).

Parking on campus can be very limited so please let the event organisers know in advance if you plan to arrive by car.  Parking restrictions apply across campus and a parking permit is required.  Failure to disply a parking permit may result in a penalty notice.
