Anaesthetics

Ultrasound guided regional anaesthesia (USGRA)

  • This one-day course is held annually/bi-annually (during increased demand) within the Suttie Centre and done in conjunction with Anatomy. It covers the basic principles of regional anaesthesia and involves tutorials, cadaveric anatomy teaching, hands on scanning and needling practice and scanning on live models, all under expert guidance.

Interventional techniques for pain management

  • Back pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal condition and accounts for significant proportion of general practice and specialist clinic consultations. Up to 7% of acute back pain sufferers develop chronic low back pain. In chronic back pain sufferers, precision diagnostic blocks can be used to locate various sources of pain such as Disc, Facet joints and Sacro-iliac joints, thereby enabling delivery of target-specific treatment.

  • The intensive workshop is an applied learning course for clinicians to improve the quality of care delivered to their patients suffering with low back pain. It allows participants to learn and improve their technical skills for such precision diagnostic blocks and target-specific treatments as well as improve knowledge about patient selection and subsequent outcomes.

  • This 12-hours workshop comprises of lectures, live demonstrations, hands-on training in cadaveric stations and Q & A sessions.

Plastic Surgery

Hand Trauma Course(in combination with Orthopaedics)

  • Our Hand Trauma course is a highly interactive hands-on course that is structured to meet the training needs of surgeons in training in Plastic or Orthopaedic Surgery. Participants will learn the surgical techniques in dealing with hand trauma, with the emphasis on soft tissue injuries, including tendon repair and flap reconstruction, and bone fracture fixation. The 2-day course format includes practical skill sessions using fresh frozen cadavers. The specimens closely simulate the clinical situation

Flap Course

  • This 3 day course, using fresh frozen cadavers, focuses on the surgical anatomy flaps commonly used in reconstructive surgery. Each delegate will have adequate opportunity to dissect the flaps, under close supervision of a Plastic surgeon. The dissections will be complemented by lectures and interactive discussion.

ENT

Aberdeen Head and Neck Anatomy Course

  • Faculty from the ENT department are pleased to run an annual one day course on purely head and neck anatomy at Aberdeen medical school. The course has a strong clinical emphasis, rather than pure anatomy and centres on common examination questions at MB ChB, BDS & MRCS levels.

Scottish ENT Update Course

  • An annual international congregation of specialists with special expertise in treating deaf infants, children and adults, advanced head and neck cancer and infections, allergic rhinitis, nasal, sinus and ear disease is of paramount importance and required to look at the latest and best evidence currently available so as to provide the best quality of care to patients. Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, and the Anatomy Facility at the University of Aberdeen is the first University in Scotland to host such events and update our trainees and consultants locally and internationally with the latest otolaryngology advancements.

MRCS

Mock MRCS examination

Candidates registered for part 1 of the surgical specialties receive instruction in surgically applied anatomy by way of a comprehensive anatomy mock examination in which the anatomy pertinent to surgical procedures is emphasized. This is followed by a viva voce on the anatomy material at which candidates receive individualised feedback on their anatomy knowledge.
