Frequently Asked Questions

If you would like to apply for recognition of your prior studies you can do so using the online form

If you have failed a course which is compulsory for your degree, you may still be able to progress into the next year of your degree depending on the amount of credits you currently have. Please work through the Credit Point Calculator to find out.

If you have enough credits to proceed, but are still missing a compulsory course, you MUST either apply for the resit assessment or take the course again in the coming academic year, timetable permitting. Further information can be found at Reassessment.

Please note:Failure to pass a compulsory course may prevent you from being able to graduate.

If you have a valid class certificate you can apply for resits via the Online Store. Further information can be found at Reassessment.

What is a valid class certificate?/ How do I know if I hold a valid class certificate?

As long as you have not withdrawn from a course or received a C7 for a course, you will hold a valid class certificate.

Your class certificate will be valid for the academic year in which you took the course and the academic year immediately following.

If you have failed a course which is a prerequisite for a compulsory course you cannot progress until you have either:

  • passed the course or
  • received a prerequisite waiver.

Your Registry Officer will liaise with your School to request a waiver on your behalf. If your School does not grant this request we will send you an email to outline your options. Please refer to the Catalogue of Courses if you are unsure if your course is a prerequisite.

Please read the University's Policy and Procedures on Student Appeals and the Complaints Handling Procedure – both found here.

If you feel you have been disadvantaged during your studies by circumstances outwith your control (such as a medical condition or family bereavement) you may wish to ask the Students’ Progress Committee to give your case special consideration. More information on the process, including the deadline for submission of cases can be found on our Applying for Special Consideration webpage
