Help with Additional Registration Support - Council Tax

Frequently Asked Questions

Full-time students are exempt from paying Council Tax. The University sends a list of registered students to the Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Councils. You will only appear on the list if you are fully registered by the time it is sent, if your registration has been completed after this you will need to get a 'council tax certificate' from the Infohub. You will also only appear on the list if the address on your record shows you live within the Council's remit. As such, please ensure that your address is up-to-date.

However, if you are asked by your Council for evidence of your student status, please email the Infohub (infohub@abdn.ac.uk) and request a 'council tax certificate'. In your email please include your Aberdeen and home addresses to ensure the document you are sent is accurate.

Please note: this document can only be produced the day after you complete MyCurriculum.

The Infohub (infohub@abdn.ac.uk) can provide you with documentation which confirms your student status. When requesting this by email, please confirm your Aberdeen and home addresses to ensure the document you are sent is accurate.

Some authorities may provide you with a form for the University to complete. This can be emailed to the Infohub (infohub@abdn.ac.uk) to be stamped and signed, or to be passed on to the relevant department for completion.

Aberdeen City Council defines a full-time student as "a person who is studying for at least 21 hours per week, who is required to attend for at least 24 weeks per year and whose course lasts for at least one academic year."

Part-time students who satisfy the above criteria and need a letter for Council Tax purposes can apply for a confirmation of registration letter from the Online Store. When placing the order, these students should use the Additional Information text box to note that the confirmation of registration letter is for Council Tax purposes. (This only applies to undergraduate and postgraduate taught students because postgraduate research students already have a process in place.)

Aberdeen-based students who need to apply for Council Tax exemption or discount can do this through the Aberdeen City Council website. If students have any other specific enquiries regarding their Council Tax they can contact Aberdeen City Council directly.
